Etymology

Thelymitra from Greek 'thelys' meaning a bishop and 'mitra' meaning a headwear, hat, hence a bishop's mitre, referring to the sometimes plumed or decorated wings of the column, which is usually produced behind and over the anther in a hood-like projection. Brevifolia from the Greek 'brevis' meaning short and 'folium' meaning leaf, referring to the leaf which is very short compared to the height of the inflorescence.

Distribution and status

Found in southern Mount Lofty Ranges and the South-east in South Australia, growing in a wide variety of habitats including open forest, woodland and heathland in winter wet areas on sand and clay loams. Native. Common in South Australia. Common in the other states.

Flowering between late September and November.
