Chalcophorotaenia sp. Southern Flinders  Distinctive features

Relatively broad body shape. Background colour dark grey-black to purplish-brown with blue to green and pink reflections and extensive areas of (creamy-)yellow powder.

Notes

Until July 2024, this taxon was treated on this website as Chalcophorotaenia beltanae Blackburn 1894a. However, an image of the holotype of that nominal species (collected from near Beltana in the northern Flinders Ranges, SA) shows it to be predominantly green, and possibly synonymous with C. australasiae or C. quadriimpressa.

Consequently the taxon presented here, based on a specimen from the southern Flinders Ranges with dark purplish-brown background colouration, has been reassigned a phrase name, pending a taxonomic revision of Chalcophorotaenia.

Host plant notes

Although the specimen illustrated was caught on foliage of Acacia calamifolia, it possibly originated from foliage of adjacent Red Gums Eucalyptus camaldulensis which had been swept and shaken shortly beforehand.
