Neobubastes nickerli  Distinctive features

Strongly iridescent, with upper side bright blue to green, pronotum with dense puncta almost coalescing, elytra with conspicuous, punctate, shallowly-raised, longitudinal striae that are closely and evenly spaced; ventral side golden to red-copper in males and blue-green in females, lustrous, and with sparse fine pubescence.

Notes

I trapped seven individuals of this species east of Kingoonya between 24 Oct 2023 and 8 Jan 2024, and another one in the ensuing period to 18 Apr 2024. These are the first reported records of the species in SA, and represent a major disjunction from its known distribution in the western half of WA.

estimate of active beetles, inferred* from adjoining date ranges
inferred* active beetles only (mostly from colour lure trap results)
*Inferred when a site has counts of active beetles for each of two consecutive periods (date ranges), one finishing and the other starting in the same quarter-month.
The count estimate is assigned to that quarter-month and calculated as the lower of the two total beetle counts, divided by the number of quarter-months in its date range.
Assumes that beetle activity is essentially continuous within a single active period per year, and that date ranges do not bridge a non-active period (thus only ranges of < 4 months are used).

Host plant notes

Eucalyptus is reported as a host plant for this species in WA (Michael Powell, 2020, pers.comm.). The SA specimens were collected in the immediate vicinity of a Red Mallee Eucalyptus socialis stand.
