Neobuprestis peroni  Distinctive features

Elytra with widely spaced, sharply defined, narrow ridges (costae). Sexually dimorphic: females dark brown with extensive purple colouration and blue-green reflections; males have the elytra straw-coloured or translucent and purple areas restricted or absent, are more strongly tapered apically, and have larger antennae serrations.

Notes

Gory & Laporte 1838 based their description of this species (as Stigmodera peroni) on type material from 'Ile des Kangouroos' (Kangaroo Island).

Host plant notes

Only collected sporadically, with no evidence for preferred adult hosts, and larval hosts unknown. Commenting on this species (as Strigoptera australis), Goudie 1920 noted: 'Twenty years ago it used to occur in considerable numbers in the Birchip [NW Victoria Mallee] district, appearing about the middle of January, when it would be found in the mornings clinging to the wheat stubble, low mallee shoots, &c.'.
