Plants of
South Australia
Family name updates, July 2023

The State Herbarium of South Australia updated many of the plant family names in early July 2023. This was based on the paper "An update of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG IV, 17 Janurary 2016" in the "Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2016". These changes are reflected in the official SA plant census.

The following list is ordered by the previous (old) family name, which begins the second line of each block. The first line is the current (new) name, which may be an existing name, in which case it is labelled '[existing]'. The label '[partly]' after an old family name indicates that only some of the genus names were moved to the new family name. If an old family name was completely renamed to the new name, then the genus count is displayed, otherwise a list of the genus names that moved to the new family are displayed.
